Candlemaker

Candlemaker Community Project

Researching the area we found an old arched gateway at the north of Greyfriars cemetery largely hidden through accumulated masonry of the centuries which would have formed the original processional route to Greyfriars Kirk.

Reinstatment of this historically important pasage through the Old Town was incorporated into our idea. Our project envisaged a small community of housing association flats with a community enterprise employing residents below. At ground level there would therefore be workshops, offices, a garden and marketplace, shops and a cafe. The design works with the stepped section proving a glazed wintergarden of shared space between the main portion of the building and workshops.

After making progress with the joint owners and helping to define a brief combining residential and community space, the owner took the project to invited competition of architects where it was won by others.
