Leith Lofts
status: completed 1999
project value: £1.5M

The conversion of two former whisky and tobacco bonds for Whiteburn Projects Ltd provided the opportunity for the first complete New York type Loft apartment scheme in Scotland. For the first time people had a choice of buying a shell or a fitted out apartment. The sub division into 28 apartments was carried out in synergy with the existing beam and column structure bringing about a sympathetic transformation of the fabric. The composition is punctuated dramatically with cedar clad rooftop love nests creating a result which is greater than the sum of its parts. All the apartments were designed, built, and sold during the 18 month projected schedule and within the cost plan. Unusually STV devoted an entire program in their Home Show series to the development.
